The famous Tiffany Lamps were created by Louis Comfort Tiffany who was an American. These lamps are famous for their vibrant colours, bejewelled and dragonfly designs. Louis Comfort Tiffany was the son of the well known New York jeweller, Charles Tiffany. He was involved with the vibrant artistic movement Art Nouveau. This movement profoundly affected his creative ideas and artwork when he was in Europe. During this time even Art Nouveau was reaching its peak development. Tiffany used these creative ideas and art for designing lamps with coloured glasses. He experimented and developed a way to make glass lamps with different colours and styles.

He created the stained glass in a whole spectrum of peacock colours. These stained glasses were a perfect medium for softening and diffusing the barrenness of the light. With this new innovative design Louis Comfort Tiffany created an excellent masterpiece. His designs had different shades of colour and light mixed together in such a way that the end result was outstanding. These lamps made from glass and metal became very popular among people as they had a different glow and colours than normal glass lamps.

Along with colours he even experimented with blown glass technique to create new designs. His team consisted of skilled craftsmen and glassblowers to help him make unique lamps that were treasured by people. These lamps were very expensive and a luxury item and only the wealthy and rich people could afford them in America.

The term “Favrile” is used to define designs which had colours in the glass among the tiffany lamps. The word “Favrile” means by hand and this technique was patented by Tiffany in 1880. These designs were different from the stained glass technique which was used in Europe.

Tiffany was the man who introduced color into glass and the term “Favrile” is used in the world of tiffany lamps to define it. Actual meaning of favrile is by hand and Tiffany patented the technique around 1880.It was a very unique style of colored glass and was unlike the stained glass which was very prevalent in European artwork. It was just the coloring of a pain glass.

But Tiffany used a different method which involved spraying reheated glass with a vaporized solution of salts of tin or iron which was absorbed by the molten glass and created layers of reflecting color when the object cooled.

Tiffany lamps had popular designs like dragonfly, peacocks, wisteria and water lilies. During that time having these lamps was only the reach of the rich and wealthy Americans.
