UK Personal Debt Increasing!
Recent figures from Credit Card Action show that UK personal debt is continuing to increase. Personal debt grew by 10.5% to £1,237 billion. Secured lending on homes was £1,205 billion at the end of July 2006, an increase of 11.2% in the last year.
Meanwhile, UK consumers are continuing to increase their borrowing levels. Lending to consumers in July 2006 was up 7.2% in the last 12 months to £211.9 billion. Including mortgages, the average owed by every UK adult is now £26,313. This compares with an average household debt (including mortgages) of just over £50,000. Each household now pays an average of £3,086 in interest payments each year. Credit Action’s report suggests that Britain’s personal debt is increasing by £1 million every four minutes.
